Wasps

The two types of wasp that are found in the UK are the Common wasp and the European wasp. The nests are basically of the same construction. The common wasp nest is normally built underground but often they choose buildings, hollow trees, just about anywhere that is dry. The nest of European wasp is generally found close to the ground or in bushes and trees. Wasp populations grow during the summer and reach a peak in Aug-Sept. All wasps, except the queens, die off in winter.

Fleas

Fleas are a common problem in homes especially for those with cats or dogs. They are also frequently found when moving into a home that previously had pets. While fleas can transmit disease, in this country it is very rare. Instead, the primary concern is the distress that flea bites cause to people and pets. Flea cocoons can remain dormant for two years or more and are awoken by the vibration of footsteps. It is very common for a flea infestation to remain dormant in an empty home but to awaken when people move in. Infants are at higher risk from being bitten by fleas particularly when playing on the floor. They also tend to be more sensitive than adults to flea bites. Whilst DIY pest control products can be very effective in getting rid of fleas, more established flea infestations may require professional treatment.
